Fire and Folklore: The Burning of Bridget Cleary 31 Oct 2026

Fire and Folklore: The Burning of Bridget Cleary – Revisited Halloween Special 🎃 In March 1895, in a small village in County Tipperary, 26-year-old Bridget Cleary became the victim of one of the most disturbing crimes in Irish history. Her husband believed she had been taken by the fairies and replaced by a changeling. What followed was a shocking tragedy that would make headlines far beyond Ireland and leave Bridget's name forever associated with the darker side of Irish folklore. For this special Halloween upload, we're revisiting an episode originally released in January 2024, now featuring an atmospheric original musical score composed by James Hanly of South East Technological University (SETU). James's music brings a new dimension to Bridget's story, and I'm delighted to have another opportunity to showcase the talent of SETU's students. A huge thank you to James and Luke for their fantastic work. Happy Halloween from Ireland Crimes and Mysteries! 🎃 Keep your eyes open and your mind curious. The Last Fare: Eileen Costello O’Shaughnessy 06 Sep 2026

On a Sunday evening in November 1997, Galway taxi driver Eileen Costello O’Shaughnessy collected a passenger and set off towards Claregalway. On a quiet June morning in 2011, Bobby, affectionately known as Mr Moonlight, vanished without a trace outside a Tipperary farm. His last known words? A simple "I'll see you later," spoken to his son, but those words would be the final they ever heard from him. What truly happened that day? And why did his own family have to wait over two years before they found out what happened to their beloved father, brother and friend ? The Unforgotten, The Missing That Don't Make the Headlines 12 Apr 2026

Some missing persons become household names. Their faces are everywhere, their cases debated on every news channel, their families given national platforms to plead for answers. Others simply vanish from public consciousness. In this episode, I examine four Irish missing persons cases that have received minimal media coverage, not because they didn't matter, but because of factors that had nothing to do with the value of a human life. What determines which disappearances we remember and which we forget? Geography, class, nationality, timing. The systems that decide whose story gets told. Four people who deserved the same attention as any other missing person. Four families still searching for answers, years later, in near silence. A House Full of Victims, The McElhill Family 05 Apr 2026

In the early hours of November 13th, 2007, a neighbour in Omagh, County Tyrone, woke to screaming. Flames were tearing through the house next door. He grabbed a ladder and climbed toward an upstairs window, desperate to help. Inside were seven people. Five of them were children. By the time firefighters brought the blaze under control, all seven were dead. This is the story of what happened that night—and the years of warning signs that came before it. It's about a system designed to protect children, and what happens when that system fails. Correction: Early newspaper reports stated Arthur McElhill was 39 at the time of his death, which I repeated in this episode. The 2009 inquest confirmed he was actually 36 (born October 1971). This means he was 22, not 25, when he met 15-year-old Lorraine in 1993. The age gap was correctly stated as 7 years. This episode contains discussion of child death, domestic violence, sexual assault, and house fire. On the 29th of January 2005, Shaun Duffy left his mother's house in Meenacross, Co. Donegal. He had 500 yards to go. He made it home. Hiding in Plain Sight, Ann Lovett 25 Jan 2026

In this episode, Nules reflects on the tragic story of Anne Lovett, a 15-year-old girl from Granard, Ireland, who died alone after giving birth in a grotto in 1984. The conversation begins by painting a picture of Ireland in the early 1980s, a time characterized by a lack of open discussions about sensitive topics such as relationships and sexual health. Nules highlights how societal norms and cultural expectations created an environment where young people, particularly girls, felt isolated and unable to seek help or information about their bodies and health. This silence and stigma surrounding teenage pregnancy ultimately contributed to Anne's tragic fate, as she navigated her pregnancy alone, without the support or understanding she desperately needed.
